Santa Cruz Island Research Project 2022
In 2022, 10 undergraduate students of the UCR SEEDS Chapter traveled to Santa Cruz Island off the coast of Southern California for a three day field trip.
This student-led field research project (with faculty guidance) spanned in preparation over two quarters. On the island, participants sampled vegetation composition to investigate whether plant communities have recovered 16 years after invasive sheep were removed. This field trip was a transformative experience for participants who learned about ecological research and collaboration firsthand. This opportunity was fully-funded through: • Ecological Society of America (ESA) SEEDS Chapter Grant • California Native Plant Society (CNPS) Student Research Grant • UC Natural Reserve System (UCNRS) Student Travel Fund • Center for Conservation Biology (CCB) at UC Riverside We also want to thank: Dr. Kurt Anderson, Dr. Marko Spasojevic, Dr. Darrel Jenerette, Jared Anderson-Huxley, Annika Rose-Person, Tesa Madsen-McQueen, Andy Sanders, Teresa Salvato, Dr. Jay Reti, Dr. Lyndal Laughrin, Annie Meeder, AJ Lodge, and Dr. Roxanne Beltran.
